The river town over the pass.
Tech, outdoor industry and remote workers, just over the Cascades from Portland. Coach Leighty has been coming here for years, and it might be the best Basecamp town anywhere. Long Game coaches Central Oregon players by video, booked in Pacific time.
A town people choose on purpose.
Bend has been a getaway for me for years, and it's the town I keep picturing for a life someday. It's one of the best cities anywhere, and it might be the best Basecamp town of all.
The river is what sticks with me. The Deschutes runs right through the middle of town. On a summer day it's full of tubes and paddleboards drifting past the Old Mill, and when the sun goes down there's a show at the amphitheater on the bank.
Pick the life first, then build the work around it.
That's the Bend lesson. A lot of people there chose the town first and built their careers to fit it. That's a long game move: decide what you want your days to look like, then build toward it on purpose.

Plan a Bend day, start to finish.
